Javën e kaluar, gjatë një debati televiziv para raundit të dytë të zgjedhjeve presidenciale, Radev iu përgjigj pyetjes së kundërshtarit të tij Anastas Gerdzhikov lidhur me lidhjen e tij me Krimenë. Presidenti e quajti Krimenë ruse, pasuar nga një reagim negativ si në Bullgari ashtu edhe jashtë saj. Në këtë drejtim, ish-kryeministri Bojko Borisov shprehu shpresën se presidenti, duke pasur parasysh qëndrimin e tij për Krimenë, nuk do të mbajë të njëjtin qëndrim për çështjen e sovranitetit të Bullgarisë. Komisioni Evropian kujtoi gjithashtu qëndrimin e tij të gjatë. Për shkak të deklaratës së Presidentit, në Ministrinë e Punëve të Jashtme të Ukrainës është ftuar ambasadori i Bullgarisë, Kostadin Kocabeshev. Deklarata e Radevit është cilësuar nga Ministria si e pasaktë dhe e pavend.
Radev iu përgjigj kritikave se “aneksimi i gadishullit ishte i paligjshëm”, por se i tillë është realiteti politik dhe se “Krimeja aktualisht është ruse”.
